What is space weather?

Space weather describes the dynamic conditions on the Sun and in the space environment between the Sun and Earth. Solar flares, coronal mass ejections (CMEs), and the solar wind interact with Earth's magnetic field, producing geomagnetic storms, aurora, radio blackouts, and satellite disruptions. Flarient monitors these conditions in real time using data from NOAA, NASA, and other space agencies.

What is the Kp index?

The Kp index is a global measure of geomagnetic activity on a scale from 0 (very quiet) to 9 (extreme storm). It is derived from magnetometer readings at observatories worldwide. Kp 5 and above indicates a geomagnetic storm (G1 on the NOAA G-scale). The higher the Kp, the further south aurora can be seen and the greater the potential impact on power grids, GPS, and radio communications.

What is a solar flare?

A solar flare is a sudden, intense burst of radiation from the Sun's surface. Flares are classified by their X-ray intensity: A, B, C, M, and X (each class is ten times stronger than the previous). X-class flares are the most powerful and can trigger radio blackouts on the sunlit side of Earth within minutes.

What is a coronal mass ejection (CME)?

A CME is a massive expulsion of plasma and magnetic field from the Sun's corona. When a CME is directed at Earth, it can arrive within 1–3 days and trigger a geomagnetic storm. CMEs are the primary driver of major aurora displays and the most significant geomagnetic impacts.

What is the difference between a solar flare and a CME?

A solar flare is a burst of electromagnetic radiation (light, X-rays) that arrives at Earth in about 8 minutes and can cause radio blackouts. A CME is a cloud of charged particles that arrives 1–3 days later and causes geomagnetic storms and aurora. A flare can occur without a CME, and vice versa, though large flares are often accompanied by CMEs.

Can I see the aurora from my location?

Aurora visibility depends on your magnetic latitude and the current Kp index. At Kp 5, aurora is typically visible from northern Scotland, Scandinavia, and Canada. At Kp 7+, it can be seen across much of the UK, northern Europe, and the northern US. Use the Aurora Forecast page to get a personalised prediction for your location, including cloud cover and moon phase.

What Kp do I need to see the aurora from the UK?

From northern Scotland (Aberdeen, Inverness), Kp 5 is usually enough. From central England (Manchester, Leeds), you typically need Kp 7. From southern England (London), you need Kp 8 or 9 for a good chance. These are guidelines — clear, dark skies away from light pollution are just as important.

How do I photograph the aurora?

Use a tripod, a wide-angle lens (f/2.8 or faster), manual focus to infinity, and a long exposure (5–15 seconds at ISO 1600–3200). Even a modern smartphone with night mode can capture aurora during strong storms. The Gallery page shows real aurora photos submitted by the community with the settings used.

What time of year is best for aurora?

Aurora can occur year-round, but the equinox months (September–October and March–April) tend to have higher geomagnetic activity. Winter (November–February) offers the longest dark nights, making aurora easier to see. Summer months have too much daylight at high latitudes for good viewing.

How often is the data updated?

Live data on the dashboard refreshes every 60 seconds. Kp index, solar wind speed, and magnetic field measurements come from NOAA SWPC and the DSCOVR satellite. CME and flare data come from NASA DONKI. Aurora oval forecasts update every 5 minutes. Ionospheric TEC data from NOAA GloTEC updates every 10 minutes. Satellite positions from CelesTrak update in real time. Historical archive data is stored permanently.

Where does Flarient get its data?

We aggregate data from NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), NASA DONKI, NASA JPL CNEOS (asteroids), GFZ Potsdam (Kp), CU Boulder LISIRD (solar irradiance), NOAA GloTEC (ionospheric TEC), CelesTrak (satellite orbits), SatNOGS (community telemetry), Launch Library 2 (launch schedules), ESA, JAXA, BGS, and ISRO. The Data Sources page lists every provider with links to the original data. All data is public and freely available from the source agencies.

How accurate are the forecasts?

Short-term forecasts (1–3 hours) are highly accurate because they use real-time satellite measurements. Medium-term (1–3 days) depends on CME arrival modelling, which has inherent uncertainty — arrival times can be off by several hours. Long-term (weeks+) forecasts are probabilistic and based on solar rotation and historical patterns. We always show the confidence level with each forecast.

Why does the data sometimes look different from other sites?

Different services use different data sources, update intervals, and processing methods. For example, Kp can be reported as estimated (real-time) or definitive (revised after 24 hours). We use the most current real-time data available and clearly label the source and timestamp on every metric.

How do aurora alerts work?

Set up a Signal on the My Signals page, choosing your location, the activity type (e.g. 'see aurora'), and a threshold score. When the computed conditions exceed your threshold, the signal fires and sends a notification via your preferred channels (in-app, email, or push). Premium users can also receive Telegram alerts through our bot (@FlarientBot).

In-app alerts, email, browser push, and Discord community alerts are free for all registered users. Facebook Messenger storm alerts are also free — just message our Facebook Page. Telegram alerts with rich inline buttons are a Premium feature. Premium subscribers also get custom quiet hours, custom alert thresholds, and webhook delivery.

Can I mute alerts during quiet periods?

Yes. You can set a minimum G-scale threshold (e.g. only alert for G3+) and quiet hours on your alert preferences. Telegram users can also snooze alerts temporarily or set a mute-below-G level per chat.

What is the difference between Free and Premium?

Free users get full access to the live dashboard, archive, aurora forecast, in-app alerts, email and browser push notifications, and community features. Premium adds Telegram alerts, unlimited alert channels, the AI agents (Solar, Aurora, Asteroid), advanced forecast models, audio briefings, and streak freezes. See the Pricing page for a full comparison.

Can I use Flarient without an account?

Yes. The dashboard, archive, glossary, blog, and most tools are fully accessible without registration. You only need a free account to save locations, set up alerts, join crews, submit observations, and earn badges on the leaderboard.

How do I cancel my Premium subscription?

Go to the Account page and click 'Cancel subscription'. Your Premium access continues until the end of your current billing period, then reverts to the free plan. No further charges will be made. You can resubscribe at any time.

Is my location data private?

Yes. Location data used for aurora forecasts is stored on your account and never shared publicly. Community observations use a coarse location label (e.g. 'Edinburgh area') by default — you choose whether to include coordinates. See the Privacy Policy for full details.

What is My Flarient Terminal?

The Terminal is your personal space weather monitoring hub. Instead of looking at global data and guessing whether it affects you, you add the things you care about — your location, an aurora trip, HF radio setup, drone operations, a satellite, a flight route — and Flarient translates live space weather into a simple personal status for each one, updated in real time. The same geomagnetic storm can be an opportunity for aurora photographers and a risk for drone operators; the Terminal tells you exactly what it means for you.

Over 25 asset types across four categories: Locations & Sites (your home, observatory, photography spot, astronomy night), Trips & Expeditions (aurora trips, backcountry skiing, fishing trips), Equipment & Operations (HF radio, drone ops, GNSS equipment, satellites, ground stations, ham radio contests), and Infrastructure & Routes (power grids, pipelines, railway signalling, flight routes, maritime routes, EV routes, solar farms). Each asset type has its own status logic — aurora is good for photographers but bad for astronomers, for example.

How does the status system work?

Each asset gets a status — Normal, Watch, Elevated, Critical, or Opportunity — computed from live Kp index, solar wind, flare class, and Dst data. The status comes with a plain-English explanation of what changed and why it matters to you. You'll see a headline like 'Aurora may be visible from your location if skies are clear' instead of just a number. Premium users can set custom thresholds to fine-tune when each status triggers.

What is the 7-day forecast?

Each asset has a 7-day probabilistic forecast showing the likelihood of aurora opportunities, geomagnetic storms, solar flares, and GNSS degradation over the coming week. It helps you plan trips, schedule drone flights, or prepare for aurora viewing. Free users get one complimentary forecast view; Premium subscribers get unlimited forecasts for all assets.

When an asset's status changes, Flarient can notify you via email, push notification, Telegram, Discord, or Facebook Messenger. Smart batching groups multiple status changes in the same check cycle into a single notification. Each alert is categorised: Escalation (conditions worsening), All-clear (returned to normal), Pre-event (CME arrival forecast ahead), or Status update (routine change). You can set quiet hours and minimum alert thresholds to control when you're notified.

Can I share my terminal?

Yes. You can make your terminal public and share a link. Visitors see your monitored assets, their current status, and live space weather scores — but not your email, name, or personal details. Only the asset names and statuses you choose to make public are visible. You can toggle sharing on and off at any time.

What's the difference between Free and Premium?

Free users can monitor up to 3 assets with standard thresholds and one complimentary 7-day forecast. Premium subscribers get unlimited assets, custom thresholds, unlimited 7-day forecasts, custom webhook integration, historical data export, and advanced alert controls. See the Pricing page for a full comparison.

Click 'Add asset' on the Terminal page, choose an asset type, and fill in the configuration. For location-based assets, search for your city or address. For equipment assets, enter the relevant details like frequencies or satellite names. You can also use Quick Start Templates to add multiple related assets at once (e.g. the Aurora Chaser template adds a location, aurora trip, and photography spot together).

Can I reorder my assets?

Yes. Drag and drop assets to reorder them. Your custom order is saved automatically. You can also group assets by category and search by name or type to find specific assets quickly.

The Map tab shows all your location-based assets on an interactive map, with pins coloured by their current status. Click a pin to see the asset name, type, and current status reason. You can zoom and pan the map, and use the full-screen button for a larger view.

Can I embed Flarient widgets on my website?

Yes. We offer free embeddable badges for Kp index, aurora, storm, solar wind, flares, asteroids, and more. Visit the Widgets page, choose a badge, and copy the iframe code. No API key or registration required — the widgets update live automatically.

Is there a public API?

Yes. Our public API provides access to live space weather data, forecasts, and archive data. See the API Docs page for endpoints, rate limits, and example requests. The API is free for non-commercial use with a generous rate limit.

What is the Ionosphere Monitor?

The Ionosphere Monitor page shows real-time global Total Electron Content (TEC) from NOAA's GloTEC system, which assimilates data from ~400 ground-based GNSS receivers and COSMIC-2 radio occultation satellites. The interactive map displays 576 grid points colour-coded by electron density, helping you understand GNSS accuracy impacts and ionospheric storm conditions.

How does the Satellite Tracker work?

The Satellite Tracker page shows live positions for the ISS, Tiangong, and Hubble from wheretheiss.at, plus a searchable orbital catalog of 50 satellites from CelesTrak with inclination, orbital period, apogee, and perigee data. Positions update in real time.

What is the Launch Schedule?

The Launch Schedule page lists upcoming orbital launches worldwide from Launch Library 2 (TheSpaceDevs). Each card shows the mission name, rocket, launch provider, pad location, countdown timer, and mission description. You can filter by provider or search for a specific mission.

What is SatNOGS telemetry?

SatNOGS is a community-run network of ground stations that receive telemetry from satellites. The Signal Network page shows recent observations from SatNOGS stations worldwide, including satellite names, station locations, and observation status. This data is licensed under CC BY-SA.

How do direct messages work?

Registered users can send direct messages to each other. Go to the Messages page, click 'New', and search for a user by their display name. Messages are delivered in real time, and you'll see a conversation list on the left with the active thread on the right.

Can I control who messages me?

Yes. In your Account → Preferences → Direct Messages, you can: disable direct messages entirely, set a minimum leaderboard points threshold (e.g. only users with 100+ points can message you), or require that senders have verified aurora observations. These settings give you full control over who can reach you.

How does the auto-translate button work?

When you receive a message from another user and your app language is set to something other than English, a small 'Translate' button appears next to the message. Click it to instantly translate the message to your chosen language using AI. The translation is cached so you only translate once per message. You can toggle between the original and translated text at any time.

How do I report a user?

If you receive an inappropriate message, click the flag icon next to the message. Choose a reason (spam, harassment, inappropriate content, misinformation, scam, or other) and add optional details. Our team reviews every report and takes action when necessary. Reports are confidential.

Can I upload a profile photo?

Yes. Go to Account → Profile and click the camera icon on your avatar. You can upload a custom photo (up to 5MB) or keep using one of the built-in emoji avatars. If you upload a photo, it replaces the emoji on the leaderboard and in messages. You can remove the photo at any time to go back to your emoji avatar.

How does the country selector work?

In Account → Profile, the country selector lets you choose from ~200 countries using a searchable A-Z list with flags. Your country is shown on the leaderboard for country-specific filtering. You can set it to 'Private' if you prefer not to display your country.

Can I customise my dashboard layout?

Yes. Click the 'Customise dashboard' button at the top of the dashboard. You can reorder 16 logical section groups (Kp Index, Aurora, HF Radio, etc.) and hide any you don't need. Your custom layout is saved to your browser and persists across visits. Click reset to return to the default layout.
