FLARIENTToday's analysis

HF absorption is currently minimal because GOES X-ray and energetic-proton levels are low.

Why it matters →

D-RAP (D-Region Absorption Prediction) is continuously driven by GOES X-ray flux and energetic proton flux. Solar flares bathe the sunlit ionosphere in X-ray photons, ionizing the D-region and absorbing HF radio signals. Polar cap absorption events from energetic protons extend the blackout to high latitudes for days.

I enjoyed watching the Perseids Meteor Shower in London this morning. The sky was dark and clear, perfect for the viewing experience. I got to see many meteors directly from my line of sight.

LISIRD Solar Irradiance Datasets

CU Boulder LASP · 4 curated datasets · CC BY 4.0

The LASP Interactive Solar Irradiance Datacenter (LISIRD) hosts 146+ solar datasets. Flarient surfaces a curated allowlist of the four most operationally relevant for space-weather forecasting. Data is fetched server-side with attribution.

F10.7 cm Radio Flux

Solar radio flux at 10.7 cm wavelength — the standard proxy for solar EUV output. Drives HF radio propagation quality and satellite drag estimates.

Magnesium II Index

Mg II core-to-wing ratio — a key proxy for chromospheric solar activity. Correlates with EUV irradiance and is used in upper-atmosphere models.

Solar Lyman-alpha

Composite solar Lyman-alpha irradiance at 121.6 nm — the strongest single spectral line in the solar UV spectrum. Drives upper-atmosphere heating and hydrogen ionization.

Sunspot Number (Ra)

American Relative Sunspot Number — the classic indicator of solar cycle progression. Higher counts mean more active regions and greater flare/CME probability.
